SYNOPSIS

‘The Runaway’ presents complicated vicissitudes of Kazimierz Piechowski (nr 918), the last living fugitive, and organizer of the most spectacular and courageous escape from the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. On June 20th, 1942, four prisoners wearing SS uniforms fled with weapons by camp’s commander car. The entire story, told by Mr Piechowski himself, keeps the audience in suspense till the end, while brave and innovative solutions of exploiting Archives explore entirely new ways of treating the archive materials and provide the documentary with a completely new quality. The film contains the previously unknown photos and materials presenting a ‘private’ life of SS-men that tortured and oversaw the prisoners in the camp. In addition, following the fate of the runaways, film briefly but very interestingly shows the complicated post-war history.
‘The Runaway’ won a number of awards, including Bronze Medal at the New York Festivals 2008, People Choice Award at the Cracow Film Festival 2007, The Best Direction Award at Moscow Zolotoy Vityaz 2008 etc. After Exeter, it will be also screened at the 23rd International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

Screening will be followed by the discussion with the movie director, Mr Marek Pawłowski and the producer, Ms Małgorzata Walczak. Our guests will talk about the making of the movie and things they have discovered while making it.
There will be also time for questions about more technical aspects of movie making.

W swoim filmie, Marek Tomasz Pawłowski śledzi losy niezwykłej postaci Kazimierza Piechowskiego (nr 918), organizatora i jedynego żyjącego do dziś bohatera najbardziej brawurowej ucieczki z Auschwitz, która miała miejsce 20 czerwca 1942 roku.
W ukradzionych z magazynu mundurach SS, z bronią, wydostali się oni przez bramę wjazdową samochodem wice-komendanta. Nie była jego jedyna ucieczka. Piechowski, przed kamerą, opowiada nie tylko o ucieczce i koszmarze czasów obozowych, ale i o walce przeciw hitlerowcom w oddziale Armii Krajowej, za co po wojnie władze komunistyczne wtrąciły go do więzienia.
Dokument uzupełniają bogate materiały archiwalne, w tym ujęcia okolic obozu i magazynu przeplatające się ze współcześnie wykonanymi zdjęciami. W filmie wykorzystano także dotąd nie publikowane zdjęcia oprawców Piechowskiego, którzy „przyłapani” zostali w prywatnych sytuacjach na terenie obozu.


Po pokazie zapraszamy na dyskusję z reżyserem filmu, Panem Markiem Pawłowskim oraz producentką, Panią Małgorzatą Walczak. Będzie ona okazją aby zajrzeć za kulisy produkcji filmu, i dowiedzieć się jakie materiały odkryto przy okazji jego kręcenia. now 90 years old, and play him her tribute song “Kommander’s Car”.
Katy’s song tells the drama of the last part of Kazik’s escape. His and his fellow prisoners lives depend on their daring and bravado during the next five seconds…
